Non-rotary motion

[edit]

I would call the stops in the linear dashboard climate control between face, feet, screen, etc detents. What else can I call the spring-loaded detent that I must overcome to shift into reverse and fifth gears? But I am no authority. Cgmusselman (talk) 07:04, 3 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Article is Wrong

[edit]

What this article describes is a ratchet mechanism, not a Detent; a Detent is a groove or depression in a mechanical element, plus a sprung member that partially enters the element, partially holding the element in a detented position.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.89.73.55 (talk) 14:01, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
