Based on the Children of Lir

Someone has said that this book was based on the Irish mythological tale of the Children of Lir, and it's easy to make that assumption. I made it myself when I read the books. However, years ago on a Juliet Marillier forum, I asked the author about this and she'd never even heard of the Children of Lir. I explained the story and she was interested. Looking into it further, there are numerous similar stories from elsewhere in Europe that hew very close to the Children of Lir, so it's likely a common enough folktale.

I can't find the post with my asking her and her responses - indeed, I can no longer find the forum. It was well over a decade ago and has likely been shut down since. But I absolutely remember my astonishment on her saying she'd never heard of the Children of Lir at all. The intro to the article claims it's based on the Children of Lir but there is no source citing this. I would suggest removing it until a source is found, though given what the author herself told me all those years ago, I doubt one will be found. ~2026-22283-4 (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2026 (UTC)
