Layout diagrams

[edit]

Dear colleague @Belbury: You have reverted my edit replacing a photo of yet another room with tables and chairs with a layout diagrams and making hollow square bold as a redirect target. From the edit comment, it is not possible to understand if you object to:

  1. replacing the photo with diagrams
  2. quality of the particula diagram
  3. highlighting the redirect target
  4. some combination of the above or something else

Would you be so kind as to comment here on your reversal? For the avoidance of doubt, I am not looking for detailed explanations, just for an indication of what was the problem. Викидим (talk) 12:41, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi, my edit summary was "WP:AIGI", a reference to the AI section of image use policy: Most images wholly generated by artificial intelligence (AI) should not be used in mainspace, especially for named people and in technical or scientific subjects such as anatomy and chemistry.
From the file description at File:Meeting room layouts.png you'd asked a chatbot to create your own meeting-room layouts stacked vertically, with no further instruction?
I didn't realise that you were trying to also make a redirect target by bolding one of the eight terms in the text list, but hollow square does not redirect here. Belbury (talk) 12:45, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for a prompt reply! Hollow square (room layout) links here. This was my original issue: I have discovered that Wikipedia sends people like me (interested in this room layout) to long-forgotten infantry tactics instead. I do not think a standalone article is warranted, and the natural candidate for redirect was this article, but there was no picture. So I made one using AI. Since my use of AI is apparently the only thing standing between me and happiness, I will quickly re-do the same picture using non-AI diagramming tool (this was not an attempt to compete with da Vinci to begin with, and putting together few rectangles in an diagram editor does not require much skill). Once done, I will resubmit my change with a different file. Викидим (talk) 13:26, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, a human-made diagram would be appreciated. I'd recommend working from your own experience or from other diagrams online, though, rather than recreating what an AI generated when asked to "create your own meeting-room layouts". Some of the layouts the AI generated would be unsourced on current sourcing, or differ from those given in the only cited source at https://www.cmu.edu/conferences/facilities/meeting/uc/room-styles.html (eg. whether hollow square has a row of seats at the top, or a lectern).
I'm not sure that the bold is needed for that kind of disambiguated redirect, when it's an element in a short list. Belbury (talk) 13:49, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done I have burnt some of my time, but have learnt a beautifule new tool, TikZ. I am going to revert your change, and then substitute the new manually created SVG file and remove bolding in a separate edit. Викидим (talk) 14:17, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Now that this is a (programmatic) TikZ file (File:Room-layouts.svg), editing is easy (~150 lines of very readable code total). I have used Overleaf to convert TikZ into vector PDF and pdf24.org for the final SVG. Викидим (talk) 14:25, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Updated per my understanding of your request. Викидим (talk) 14:46, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
