I have learned alot from thist article. But I wish the word 'postponed' would be changed. It makes the civil war seem inevitable, and implies that the alternative 'undivided house' was not a real possibility.
@Sbioggio Do you have a suggested alternative wording? I would argue that postpone, or delay, or a synonym remains appropriate. While at the time the war might not have seemed inevitable, we have the value of hindsight that shows that the war happened nonetheless. CaptainEekEdits Ho Cap'n!⚓06:51, 20 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory were never slave territories. Utah Territory actually voted to prohibit slavery. New Mexico Territory did not get around to making a decision before the Civil War. In 1859, California passed the Pico Act, offering the southern third of the state to the USA for reorganisation as a slave territory called "Colorado." The object was to extend the Missouri Compromise line to the Pacific, thereby putting pressure on New Mexico Territory to allow slavery. Congress had just begun to consider California's gift when the Secession Crisis began, followed by the Civil War - and that took precedence.
