i don't believe this is the correct meaning of this word.

Compadre and Padrinho are different things, both in spanish as in portuguese.

Padrinho is the God-father to a child, but Compadre is what that same God-father is to the father of the child, and vice-versa.

I made some changes in reference to the use of the word in Spain. The word is still very much in use, especially in Andalusia. The term can be used both to define a best friend with no relation to his friend kids, or to the padrino/godfather of the kid.
