Greenwich CT

Visiting a friend in Greenwich, Connecticut in '96 I recall him having to show a card proving residence to get the boat to Beach Island. That would predate the two examples given. Anybody know more? I vaguely recall Michael Moore staging a mock invasion landing on the island for the BBC. (See List of TV Nation episodes#Season 2, episode 1) Bazj (talk) 19:45, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Limitations & Requirements

Hello Everyone,

Made a wikipedia account specifically to edit & research for this article. Cards seem to have the same level of limitation is regards to benefits that can be applied for, but a more complex variety of requirements per region. Plan on making a table denoting location of each ID program and its requirements. With the goal of making this a resource for any homeless/immigrant person to find their local program. You mentioned, "Cards seem to have the same level of limitation is regards to benefits that can be applied for". I do think that some municipalities have unusual and noteworthy levels of benefits available to cardholders. The idNYC program in New York City has partnerships with local cultural institutions that, for example, help cardholders get cheap or free admissions to museums, which is not something that, for instance, the Oakland City ID program does. And the 2016 idNYC program evaluation indicated that the museum benefits got a lot of local residents to apply -- including legal residents -- which probably worked to decrease any stigma associated with the card as only or primarily being for undocumented people. So that sort of consideration might be relevant in the article as well.

Regardless, noting the different documentation requirements for the different programs does sound like a good addition to this article! I can see the pros and cons of it being its own table versus called out (maybe as its own bullet point) within each city/region section. Maybe someone else will have a different opinion. :-)

What happened to the Jersey City proposal?

In 2017 Jersey City was considering a municipal ID program; we removed it from this page since it was apparently never implemented. What happened? The last info I can find about it is this May 21, 2017 article saying that it was set for a City Council vote that week. I've looked in the minutes for that meeting (context: 2019 minutes listing) and I can't figure out whether it was voted on at all. And two other news articles (June 26, 2017; July 19, 2017) mention the Jersey City plan as though it's been approved ("Jersey City and municipalities in the state are some of the places where local identification cards have been approved in the state."; "If passed, Bridgeton would join other municipalities such as Jersey City and Newark in providing local identification cards to its residents.")

Jersey City is in Hudson County, which does have a County Resident ID card program. Maybe this idea got folded into that? Sumana Harihareswara 15:34, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

I wrote to a news reporter who'd been covering this issue; the reporter told me that the city dropped the idea when New Jersey decided to start issuing driver's licenses to undocumented noncitizens. Would love to find a published source for this. Sumana Harihareswara 15:20, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
