[edit]

Replace this: "The word cisgender (often shortened to cis; sometimes cissexual) describes a person whose gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth,"

To this: "A cisgender (often shortened to cis; sometimes cissexual) person has a gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth," CoolBaljeetFan12 (talk) 00:01, 8 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not done I can see why you would suggest this but there is a good reason why we can't do this without changing the article more fundamentally. The article title is in italics because currently this is an article about the word cisgender rather than about the state of being cisgender. Personally, I'd be happy if this could be converted into an article about being cisgender but that would be very hard to do. There isn't much source material for this. Nobody studies cisgender people to ask how we live or how we got like this even though it would be every bit as valid ask these questions as it is to ask them about transgender people. --DanielRigal (talk) 11:47, 8 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
How about this that I should edit and change: "A cisgender (often shortened to cis; sometimes cissexual) person has a gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth," CoolBaljeetFan12 (talk) 21:55, 8 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Slang?

[edit]

The false idea that one new term necessitates a new term for something else is patently false

An Inclusive term to describe someone or something that is another or additional descriptor does not mean that the overwhelming majority needs to change how that society refers to itself just to justify that new term\description.

Adding a new descriptor does not mean there is also a need for this new term to take precedence to the established terms.

If purpose of a new term does not clarify or positively help define it, should it be adopted?

If based on data, I don’t believe this should be categorized as anything other than slang. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony Zahler (talk • contribs)

Two points:
  1. WP:NOTFORUM
  2. If a word or phrase is being used in scholarly publications, in their own words and not as part of a quotation, then it is not slang. Cisgender gets 131,000 hits in Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=cisgender+-wikipedia It is acceptable academic terminology in active use. --DanielRigal (talk) 13:13, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to change it to this "A cisgender (often shortened to cis; sometimes cissexual) person has a gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth." — Preceding unsigned comment added by CoolBaljeetFan12 (talk • contribs) 01:07, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
