[edit]Added historical and classification info for this language, as well as data to the infobox, as part of edits made to Manche Chol Territory. This seems to no longer count as a stub, so I removed that tag, but it could use more refs as this language family seems to have a lot of literature on it. Might need to be tagged with the 'relies on too few sources' tag...? – Asdfjrjjj (talk) 03:17, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Could also use map eg blank svg one in Commons seems accurate. – Asdfjrjjj (talk) 03:33, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Question on May 7, 2026
[edit]Did this replace a 'Ch'olan-Tzeltalan languages' page? Was there formerly a 'Tzeltalan languages' page that was classified as a stub and collapsed into this page? It's true that Tzeltalan might not need its own page, since it's only two living languages, but I think there should either be a 'Ch'olan-Tzeltalan languages' page in addition to this page, or (maybe less optimal) this page should be renamed to 'Ch'olan-Tzeltalan languages' and have a section about Tzeltalan languages. It seems inconsistent that one of the six generally-accepted top-level Mayan branches (Ch'olan-Tzeltalan/Ch'olan Tseltalan) doesn't actually have its own page. This page also uses the spelling Tseltalan, which I think is dispreferred in English academia and is only referenced as a potential alternate spelling (Tseltal and Tsotsil) on the actual 'Mayan languages' page.
If the subgrouping of Ch'olan and Tzeltalan together is controversial (I don't think it is?), someone please let me know. I am almost positive a 'Ch'olan-Tzeltalan languages' page existed before. ~2026-27880-61 (talk) 00:03, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Hmmm dunno how to verify that really :( but looking at the last edit prior to my adding anything (article on Nov 2021), looks like "Cholan" was given as an alias for "Cholan-Tseltalan" in the lead, so maybe "Cholan–Tzeltalan languages" redirected here? I don't really recall changing any redirect, but for sure distinguished Cholan from Cholan–Tzeltalan (as source said the latter subsumed the former). Dunno if there's enough sources for a standalone "Tzeltalan languages" article, but would be in favour of adding the content here and moving the article to "Chʼolan–Tzeltalan languages" (w/ appropriate redirects).
- Ps not sure how to ping, sorry. Plus, will add link to article to tm:mayan languages :) - Asdfjrjjj (talk) 08:22, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Just checked: "Ch'olan–Tzeltalan languages" has redirected here since at least 2011 (here), so for sure adding Tzeltalan content here then moving to "Ch'olan–Tzeltalan languages" seems like best move imo. My fault for removing the Tzeltalan content (sorry!, didn't check the redirects), but can add content and do page move in future unless you get to it first :) - Asdfjrjjj (talk) 08:32, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you! You're totally fine, it seems like it might be a mix of minor errors from multiple people ("Ch'olan needs its own article because of Classical Mayan," "Tzeltalan shouldn't have an article," "I'm renaming this to just 'Ch'olan languages' but forgetting to remove the Tzeltalan info"). I'll add a little info tonight and check back on the article/your potential reply tomorrow. ~2026-27880-61 (talk) 21:38, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
