A Confusion of Hills - Which is the real Cerro El Cono?

There are three issues that need to be considered in this article.

1. The first is that reports by some of the popular news reports[1] that Cerro El Cono is a "solitary hill" are incorrect. The two 1:100,000 scale geologic maps[2][3] with topographic base, of the region show that Cerro El Cono is part of cluster three conical or spine-like hills. These three hills are part of a larger cluster of hills composed Cenozoic volcanic rock, The false impression that Cerro El Cono is a solitary landform is further perpetrated by media photographs that were either taken (framed) or cropped to exclude showing the other hills.

2. There appear to be some confusion over which of a northwest to southeast trending row of three conical or spine-like hills is Cerro El Cono. The pertinent regional geological map[2] with a topographic base labels the middle hill (summit elevation ±518 m) of the three hills as "Cerro El Cono". Judging from the descriptions and photographs available online, the popular articles[1][4][5] refer to the hill at the southeast end of this row (which lacks a maximum summit elevation and has a elevation ±341 m side elevation but is considerably higher than that). This supposition is supported by the latitude and longitude, "-7.963010971488621, -73.78224313086483". given in the Live Science article, which is the location of the southeastern most hill.[1]

3. The estimated summit elevation of the southeastern most hill mentioned above is ±670 meters based on the ASTER DEM[6] and ±728 meters based on the SRTM DEM[7]. This range of summit elevation for the Southeastern most hill is significantly below of ±850 meters given in the Infobae article[5] and elsewhere. A summit elevation of ±850 meters make the southeastern most hill about ±513 meters tall, which greatly exceeds the ±400 meter tall figure given in the National Geographic article.[4] It may or may not be a coincidence that the nearby summit of Cerro San Lucas lies at an elevation of ±847 meters and sources have Cerro San Lucas confused with the southeastern most hill.

The different sources used in this article are inconsistent and likely confused and contain errors in the information / misinformation they present. Somehow this needs to be sorted out, including finding new reliable sources.
