America's Best Singer?

This claim, in the opening paragraph of the essay, is sourced to an article by cultural critic Stanley Crouch. But the article itself doesn't contain those three words or make that claim. Perhaps "America's Best Singer" was the way Crouch's piece was headlined in the print edition? This is flawed sourcing, in any case. Crouch's short essay was indeed framed within a schema titled "America's Best," which began as follows: "For this first installment in a five-part series on America’s best in many fields, we’ve chosen people who represent the highest quality in 21 categories in the arts and entertainment." Here's the TOC for that July 9, 2001 issue. Scroll down to Cassandra Wilson.
