Uncited sentence and confusing sentence

[edit]

This sentence is uncited: "However, it is beyond doubt that the promotions of papal relatives to the College of Cardinals were common in the 13th century." It was not present in the article when it was TFA previously.

I have no clue what "According to historian John Bargrave, "by the Council of Bazill, Session 21, the number of cardinals was not to be above 24, and not any nephew of the Pope or of any cardinal was to be of that number. (Session 23.)"" is trying to do, I don't think it is the depreciated parenthetical citation, but I don't know what it is. This sentence should probably be paraphrased instead of quoted unless the (Session 23.) has some super obvious meaning I'm missing. Does anyone have access to the source FA nom hasn't edited in 7 years. 1brianm7 (talk) 04:48, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Having found the source , I think, it is doing parenthetical citation. In which case, we really should paraphrase it so we don't carry on using it.

By the Council of Bazill, Session 21, the number of Cardinals was not to be above 24, and not any nephew of the Pope or of any Cardinal was to be of that number. ( Session 23.) As to the colour of theire roabs it altered fro time to time, according to the increase of theire honour. Innocent the IV th , the 189 th Pope, at the Generali Councill at Lions, ordered the Cardinals to weare red hats and purple gownes, .to put them in minde that they were to spende theire blood for to mayntayne the Christian religion ; and, that they might have the more respect, he order’d that they shold allwayes goe on horse back about the citty. ( Gaguin . 1. 7; sEmil. 1. 7; Martin Poulon.) Theire other ornaments were added by following Popes, especially by Paul 2 d . ( Onuphr .)

Change cardinal's to pope's in first sentence ("that cardinal's relative") ~2026-38520-83 (talk) 17:28, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not done: That would render the sentence nonsensical, as the pope is not his own relative. The existing wording is fine. Day Creature (talk) 19:18, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

“A cardinal-nephew (Latin: cardinalis nepos; Italian: cardinale nipote; Spanish: valido de su tío; Portuguese: cardeal-sobrinho; French: prince de fortune) was a cardinal elevated by a pope who was that cardinal's relative.”

to:

“A cardinal-nephew (Latin: cardinalis nepos; Italian: cardinale nipote; Spanish: valido de su tío; Portuguese: cardeal-sobrinho; French: prince de fortune) was a pope's relative, often a nephew, whom the pope elevated to the rank of cardinal.”

Reason: I found this gramatically strange. "A cardinal elevated by the pope who was that cardinal's relative." It makes it sound like the cardinal is his own relative. UltimaV (talk) 23:15, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
