My edits

I changed the first paragraph to include information about why the lighthouse was built in the first place. I took out the height that was given (193 feet, 2 inches) because it didn't match the information on the National Parks page (http://www.nps.gov/caha/lh.htm). I also added a timeline that shows the various changes that have occurred with the lighthouse, and I added a list of facts in a new "Description" section. I realize that some of my information overlaps with the existing text. I'd like to clean this up a bit, but I just didn't have time yet. -- Kam Tonnes 03:18, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

That other height appears to be (perhaps historical) "height above mean high water mark" of the light itself, not that of the tower. It's now 191 feet. --Dhartung | Talk 13:57, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Change to Relocation Section

The first sentence of this section read: "In 1999, with the sea again encroaching, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse had to be moved from its original location at the edge of the ocean to safer ground 2,900 feet (880 m) inland, and 1,500 feet (460 m) from the shoreline." "Inland" and "from the shoreline" are redundant. I reworded this sentence to be more accurate. I also added information about the additional support buildings that were moved. 1855 Cape Hatteras Beacon

I believe there used to be a page on the small Cape Hatteras Beacon built in 1855, but now the link only redirects here. I was thinking of making a subsection of this article regarding the beacon. Do we think it's notable enough to add, and would it be a fair subject that pertains to the main light? There do seem to be a decent amount of sources out there on the subject.

I don't seen any sign that there was ever an article under the specific name "Cape Hatteras Beacon". In any case, if you find any reliable sources about a Cape Hatteras Beacon, then by all means add it to the history section. St. Augustine Light includes content about possible lighthouses there going back to the 16th century. Donald Albury 21:46, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

I redirected that article because it had been unreferenced for nineteen years. A BEFORE search failed to find any significant coverage in independent reliable sources; the NRHP nomination doesn't even mention the beacon. I have just added the subsection to the history section! The only source I didn't use was the one from lighthouse digest, as Wikipedia sent me a warning message for using a blog. Other than that, if anyone finds any issues with the subsection then please do whatever you think is needed to improve upon it. :)

Nice! If there's any unique info in that lighthouse digest that you'd want to cite, let me know and I'll see if I can find another source or look in detail at that source's reliability. From my first look, it does seem reliable. DMacks (talk) 03:51, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

As of now I think the sources other than the blog are fairly useful? The most important part of the lighthouse digest blog was about the Beacon keeper being the Third assistant keeper to the main keeper, but I think that might be mentioned in one of the other sources as well.
