Adding What-A-Bully-Bulldogs.com to the bulldog page

[edit]

I have been trying to add a link to this page for three days. The link is what - a - bully - bulldogs .com. This website is not just a breeders website. The is a lot of information about the breeding standard and about how to care for bulldogs. The woman who owns What-A-Bully Bulldogs is NOT a commercial breeder. She has maybe one litter a year. She will also give advise to ANYONE who has a bulldog. All they have to do is call or email her. She will help even if the owner of the bulldog did not buy it from her. She will help people find their local Bulldog Club of America. Or if they do not what to buy a dog from her and have it shipped to them, she will help them find a breeder in their area. I have heard a lot of wonderful things about this woman from so many people. Please do not delete this link again.

  • That's nice, but it's not what the 'general information' section is for. It's reserved for websites which offer general Bulldog information ONLY, and not for breeder websites which also happen to have a page or two of breed info stuck on them. Also, Wikipedia has nothing to do with a 'nice breeder' who doesn't mind if people phone or email her. If she creates a web page which is solely devoted to general information on Bulldogs, come back and add it. Frogdogz 09:32, 06 June 2007

Book recommendation

[edit]

Hello, I am currently working on other articles so I cannot add this info in but I would like to recommend ‘The New Complete Bulldog’ by Bailey C. Hanes (1981) as a citeable book. I own the book myself and the information is extremely interesting, its incredibly well researched. I recommend any bulldog fans to read it, I’m not even really interested in bull breeds but it’s one of my favourite books. It includes info on the history and breed standards of bulldogs. Mention of derived breeds

[edit]

@53zodiac mentioning derived breeds including the Continental Bulldog would be fine, but not in the section you have put it and not with the sourcing for some of the claims. Traumnovelle (talk) 14:34, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dog/bitch vs Male/female

[edit]

@Cavalryman @Traumnovelle @~2026-48986-86 If we have exact synonyms for specalized terms which means something actively different in colloquial speech, we should prefer the synonyms. I spot checked the first 10 dog breed GAs alphabetically, and of them only one (Belgian Shepherd) uses "bitch". There's no dog breed FAs, but Wolf and Golden jackal likewise avoid "bitch". Specialised term? These are words that have been used in English in this sense for a millennium. There are more advanced terms/words in this article than 'bitch' and 'dog'. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:07, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's specialized in the sense that most people do not use them in this way. Even I stumble over "dog" for "male dog" and I'm probably in the top 1-2% of familiarity with this terminology among English speakers. I'm not saying we should remove everything that has a narrower meaning like that, just the words which have an exact synonym available as a replacement fewer people will be confused by. Rusalkii (talk) 20:17, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry but I disagree, these words are common and correct parlance. As stated previously, if you feel you need to link to Dog#Terminology I will not object. Cavalryman (talk) 07:02, 13 September 2026 (UTC).Reply
I'm not disputing that they're correct. They're certainly common in specialist sources, but I would bet the use of "dog"/"bitch" is orders of magnitude less frequent than standard gendered terms for dogs. "Male"/"female" aren't any less correct - "dog"/"bitch" doesn't carry any additional meaning, and "dog" is confusing since we also use it for the generic "domestic canine" meaning in this article. The most recent discussion I can find on the subject, searching the Wikiproject archives, is Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dogs/Archive 15#Bitches, which seems to find a rough consensus to use "male"/"female" and not "dog"/"bitch". Rusalkii (talk) 18:08, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
