Incorrect Information on Google Search

Just as I said on the Derricky Chilundika talk page yesterday, I insist that we must avoid letting Google Search and other relevant facilities pop up wrong content about a person when their name is searched. We honestly should NOT be allowing this!

Just a few minutes ago, I attempted to search "Brian Mundubile" on Google Search and it brought me exactly what is written in this page before I could click any link among the results. Honestly, when did Brian Mundubile join the United Party for National Development? If he is not a member of this party, why have we allowed this information to be written here like this? I understand that the page has a "poorly sourced" label at the top but still, we should not be "publishing" information in mainspace like this when we "know" that it is not correct, as per WP:BLP. We shouldn't be WP:Drafting articles in the mainspace! We shouldn't be publishing BLP articles with incorrect information and then "taking days or weeks" to come and replace "what we initially wrote" with "Correct, cited information".

Let me see exactly how many Zambian BLP articles have been published in the last few days with incorrect information so that I know exactly how many need to be "corrected". I don't know about others, but I find it "totally unacceptable" that we have allowed Google Search to bring incorrect information about a living individuals via Wikipedia (statements such as "Mundubile is the Kapiri Mposhi MP" or "Mundubile is a UPND member" are not correct). At least now, Google Search is showing proper information about this particular person. The information that was showing as of 2 days ago was not correct but now, correct information is showing about him online. Let's maintain the spirit of keeping incorrect information away from articles, especially WP:BLP articles. I also wish there was a way for the WP:NPP to avoid marking articles as "reviewed" without first counter-checking the BLP's content and citations. Chils Kemptonian (talk) 17:58, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

@Tumbuka Arch To be honest, we can easily run into situations where we find websites that have published information that is not correct about individuals (living or passed away). And when that happens, if there is a way, we must inform that website's administration that what they have written is not proper or at least we ask them where exactly they got their notes from, whether they spoke to the person themselves or they have copied and pasted from somewhere else.

And I appreciate Wikipedia for having the WP:BLP instruction which says "unsourced or poorly sourced material must be removed immediately". Wikipedia should refrain from being "one of those websites" where they publish incorrect information and then leave it there for search engines like Google Search or Bing Search to eventually incorporate in what they display when a person's name is searched. That is exactly why I have stated above that I wish the WP:NPP would look nicely at every BLP article before walking away rather than merely marking it as "reviewed" and then leaving it for "editors who actually care" to notice that the citation used goes to the wrong website or the information written is not even hinted in the citations that are showing. No matter how time-consuming it can be, I do not agree with leaving "new BLP articles" the way they are without WP:V being done on-the-spot. Even the creators of these articles should take the responsibility of making sure that "misinformation" (if that's the right word) is not intentionally (or mistakenly) publicized for any human, whether it's a sportsperson, a politician, a musician, an actor, etc. I always tell people that they should look at how an article looks after they click "publish changes" or avoid editing.

So, there might be no easy way to keep Google Search clean but at least we can keep Wikipedia away from being "one of those websites" that is branded as a place of incorrect information. Wikipedia should be a place of truth, especially on articles of individuals. The moment I notice that "an entire article" of a person (or part of it) has got incorrect details or details where sources do not exist, I make sure what needs to be corrected gets corrected and what needs to be removed gets removed. Typing Brian Mundubile on Google and then being told that "he is the Mkushi MP" and "he is a UPND member" by Google AI before I could even click any link made me disappointed, as I am somebody who knows very well that he is a senior PF member. The first thing I told myself was "who wrote this here and why" and that is how it became "urgent" for that article to be edited to the way it is now. The process continues and any Zambian BLP with incorrect information will be sorted out ASAP so that Google quickly stops showing people incorrect information.
