About encryption history

I just found this history of why encryption has been added to BlackBerry devices:

Little known history: BlackBerry 'became encrypted' because back in the days when it was really just a 'pager with email' - North American carriers (channel partners) were actually reading BB executives emails during negotiations (!!!). BB discovered this and decided to start with the encryption. Seriously - the first 'illegal' act was by BB customers/channel partners!

Needs a longer page name to distinguish a brand/product from 'Blackberry' fruit

This may be the most extreme example of the confusion that can be caused by case-sensitivity in page URLs.

These currently valid URLs are too confusingly similar:

• https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackberry

BlackBerry → BlackBerry (devices) – At this point, there is no WP:PTOPIC for "BlackBerry" between the line of smartphones known as BlackBerry, and the company BlackBerry Limited which was formerly known as Research in Motion. Prior to 2013, usage was clear: "BlackBerry" referred to the line of smartphones, while "RIM" referred to the company behind them. RIM's 2013 decision to rebrand as "BlackBerry" has created confusion: now "BlackBerry" can equally refer to the line of smartphones or the company.   @Axem Titanium: Based on a Google News search for "blackberry", almost all results are about the company. Few are about the phones. feminist (talk) 07:34, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

  Google News != usage in daily life. BlackBerry is still synonymous with PDA. There's obviously no way to prove or disprove that; it's just my feeling and the basis for my position. Axem Titanium (talk) 22:38, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

• Oppose - The company itself only recently (in relative terms) was renamed from RIM to BlackBerry Limited; given the nature of the firm's decline, the primary topic must surely still be the phone line itself for the name BlackBerry. Indeed, many people probably aren't even aware that it WAS renamed. Also, is (devices) even consistent with the naming conventions? @96.28.65.49 It's meaningless, and a misrepresentation of the source. It says one of the other suggested names, "strawberry", sounded too slow and drawn out. Nothing is said about "blackberry" in this regard, or the other alternative names. I've removed this. Escape Orbit ^(Talk) 05:51, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
