Billy dean robbery of Algood bank

(May 5, 1966) It is believed to be the first bank heist in Algood's history, the theft of $500 in silver coins from the branch of Citizen's Bank this week. The thieves entered through a hole in the roof of the building and used drills and torches to enter the vault, where the silver coins were in small bags on the floor of the vault. However, Charles Miller, president of the bank, says the thieves failed to crack the vault safe, which held $8,500.

• Something rare happened here this week, a bank break-in. Someone cut a hole in the roof of Citizen's Bank's Algood branch one night this week and then torched their way into the bank's vault. They took $800 in silver coins stacked on the floo, but were unable to cut through the inner vault safe to get at the bulk of the money, $8,500. The safe that saved most of the bank's money is a leftover from the original Bank of Algood, which was in operation here 50 years ago. Law enforcement authorities say the burglary resembled those recently in Crossville and Oneida.

(August 31, 1979) He was slain by FBI agents outside his mother's home on July 6. Now Fentress County Sheriff Tommy Williams says he's found the hideout where Billy Anderson stayed while on the run for five years. Something of a local folk hero, Anderson was placed on the FBI's "most wanted" list after he escaped from the Morgan County Jail, where he was being held for shooting a deputy in 1974. He had a lengthy record that included bank robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. While some thought Anderson may have been hiding among friends in Indiana, Sheriff Williams say he doesn't think so. He found a cave on the Fentress-Pickett County line with two rooms made into a crude home.
