I would like to raise a concern regarding a libelous and factually incorrect edit made to this article on 23 May 2025 by IP address 96.70.70.49.
The edit added the following statement to the "Education" section:
> “In 1985, as reported in the Purdue Exponent, he was forced to leave Purdue after being caught attempting to illegal copy source code for 4.3 BSD Unix, a violation of Purdue's source code licence from AT&T.”
This statement is false for the following reasons:
- A search of the "Purdue Exponent" archives (1887–2016) shows no such report. The only mention of my name is from March 1984, noting my promotion to Associate Professor. The search results from the Purdue Exponent archives can be found at this web address
- 4.3 BSD Unix was released in June 1986, making the alleged 1985 incident impossible.
I have removed the defamatory content in a recent edit. I am posting here in good faith to document the issue and seek consensus on how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Would it be appropriate to request page protection or semi-protection to prevent further vandalism?

- We generally don't protect articles unless there is a history of disruptive editing, and even then it's normally a short term thing. I see you've already removed the material, and I've tidied up some refs. If you'd like additional attention on the article you could post at the biographies of living people noticeboard.
