Request to rename page to Belagavi

The official name of the city was changed from Belgaum to Belagavi on 1st November 2014 by the Government of Karnataka, with approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. • Oppose: I want to point out that "Belagavi" is specifically the Kannada name, while "Belgaum" is closer to the Marathi and Urdu pronunciation. According to the article's pie chart for languages spoken here, Marathi and Urdu account for about 53% of local speakers, while Kannada is about 37%. So "Belagavi" does not have majority usage locally, even if official documents might lend the impression otherwise. (See also Belagavi border dispute; the demographics and affiliation of this city are kind of controversial, which is why I'm wary about moving to an official name in one language when languages using the other name are technically in the majority.) 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 06:15, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
