'The braves, relatively well armed and paid, were estimated to make up ten percent of the Qing dynasty's armed forces and were private armies raised and funded by provincial officials, because the ethnic Manchu dynasty was reluctant to provide funding for armies led by Han Chinese.'

The source cited is Paine (2003: 142-143). She doesn't say exactly that, though. She says that the Huai army had deteriorated because the dynasty was reluctant to fund it (in addition to Li being less capable of overseeing it at his advanced age), but she doesn't say that this was the reason for the fact that it was privately raised and funded to begin with. And she only says it about the Huai army. On other 'private armies', she says they were considered threats to central control and that the dynasty consequently tried to curtail their power. Again, she treats their existence and private nature as a given and only describes the dynasty's reaction to them, rather than explaining their existence and nature with the dynasty's policies. Now, the clause starting with 'because' is supported by Paine, but using it to explain other things than what Paine explains with it is original research. 62.73.72.101 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I should have worded that better. Instead of combining those sentences and using "because", I will split them up. The last section should be a separate sentence. Romanov loyalist (talk) 16:04, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
