Disney's Treasure Island
[edit]Shouldn't there be a section talking about Disney's Treasure Island? No, not the one on Bay Lake, that was its old name, there was gonna be another island attraction, done in a similar way to Castaway Cay but with an actual resort I think, which would've been called Treasure Island.
It was a failed project, and surrounded with controversy, which might be why there's barely any info about it. Sources are lacking, but there's a few blog posts by like three or four people, with a lot of pictures of the place after the place was abandoned. The only video I found talking about the place even mistakenly calls it either Treasure Cay, which exists and is completely unrelated to Disney, or Mowgli's Palace, which *doesn't* exist, it was the setting for a creepypasta, Abandoned by Disney.
That's how this whole confusion, and my knowledge on the topic, started. The creepypasta mentions attractions that Disney built and then abandoned. Citing the intro passage from it:
"Some of you may have heard that the Disney corporation is responsible for at least one real, "live" Ghost Town.
Disney built the "Treasure Island" resort in Baker's Bay in the Bahamas. It didn't START as a ghost town! Disney's cruise ships would actually stop at the resort and leave tourists there to relax in luxury.
This is a FACT. Look it up.
Disney blew $30,000,000 on the place... yes, thirty million dollars.
Then they abandoned it.
Disney blamed the shallow waters (too shallow for their ships to safely operate) and there was even blame cast on the workers, saying that since they were from the Bahamas, they were too lazy to work a regular schedule."
In 2012, I dunno how much info you'd find on Treasure Island, but if people did look it up, all they'd find would probably be Discovery Island, which was called Treasure Island when it was opened, before changing the name in 1978 I think.
This is probably where most of the confusion originates, most people who only partially remember the creepypasta probably misremember the Treasure Island mentioned as the one in Bay Lake, or even as the actual setting of the story. The island has some interesting history, but a lotta people like to use it more as a backdrop for subsequent horror stories... and games.
See, this confusion is probably due to the Five Nights at Treasure Island fangame, made in 2014 by a user named AnArt. It's a Five Nights at Freddy's fangame, inspired by the creepypasta, but it's set in the Bay Lake Treasure Island. I don't remember if it was a deliberate choice, or if it was a mistake in a similar way to what I described and then rectified.
As a side note, this game also has some interesting history. Being the first popular and classic styled FNaF fangame ever released... its demo at least, on December 1st, 2014. From there, it would be in development hell for 6 years, with multiple versions being made or conceptualized, and circling over the hands of multiple devs. The release of the assets for free by AnArt led to a boom of fangames being made based on it, some of which were even mistaken as official. It eventually finally released properly, as version 6.0, by a dev group called Radiance Team in 2020.
Anyways, sorry about the tangent, I was just pacing out how I even learned about all this. I will post here some links that I can find going over Disney's first Treasure Island, the Bahamas one, and see if anyone has some thoughts on this.
