"The BMW S38 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which replaced the M88 and was produced from 1986-1995." This is slightly misleading, in Europe, the M88/3 coexisted with the S38 until the M635 CSI went out of production April 1989 (in '86 and '87 the M88 was also still available in the M5).
