1. Introduction and Description

[edit]

AussieMite is an Australian-owned and made yeast extract spread, produced by AussieMite Pty Ltd. It was developed as a true local alternative to Vegemite, which had been foreign-owned since 1935 [1].

AussieMite is a savoury yeast extract with a salty, distinctive umami taste similar to Marmite and Vegemite, but with a milder aftertaste.

2. History Section

[edit]

History

AussieMite was founded on being 100% Australian owned and made. It was formulated to provide a smoother taste, enhanced texture and improved nutritional profile with added Iron and Vitamin B12 for mind and mental health.

It launched in Australian supermarkets in 2000. Shortly after its release, Kraft Foods USA initiated legal action against AussieMite but was unsuccessful in preventing the product from being sold in major and independent retailers across Australia.

In 2011, AussieMite expanded into the UK market, stocked in Waitrose, Selfridges and independent retailers.

In 2012, Australian businessman Dick Smith launched a similar yeast spread called Ozemite. IP Australia ruled in favour of AussieMite, ordering the discontinuation of Ozemite. Smith appealed the ruling, escalating the matter to the Federal Court of Australia.https://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2014/03/19/dick-smith-files-appeal-to-reverse-ozemite-decision.html

In 2017, Justice Katzmann ruled that both products could coexist in the market, stating there would be no consumer confusion. Since then, Ozemite has been discontinued.https://www.news.com.au/national/south-australia/latest-chapter-in-the-david-vs-goliath-battle-of-aussiemite-and-ozemite/news-story/900e5ce19c5410f81dc6882f406251d5

AussieMite is available in select retailers worldwide and online via the official AussieMite website and Amazon Australia.

Usage

AussieMite is primarily consumed as a savoury spread on toast, bread, crackers or other baked goods. It is typically applied thinly with butter or margarine.

Request for Edits to Improve Accuracy and Neutrality – COI Declaration

[edit]

Hello Editors,

I am affiliated with AussieMite Pty Ltd, the company that owns and produces the AussieMite yeast spread. As such, I have a conflict of interest (COI) and will not make direct edits to the article. I would appreciate any help with referencing.

I would like to request that experienced editors review and consider updating the article to ensure it reflects accurate, neutral, and well-sourced information. I am suggesting the following edits with references, and I welcome feedback or improvements:

1. Ownership & Origin

[edit]

Current: "AussieMite was invented by Roger Ramsey..." Proposed: "AussieMite is an Australian-owned and made yeast extract product, produced by AussieMite Pty Ltd. It was developed as a local alternative to Vegemite, which had been foreign-owned since 1935 until Bega purchased the Vegemite brand from Kraft Foods."

3. Nutrition Table

[edit]

I have a proposed nutrition panel based on product packaging and comparison to other yeast extracts. If appropriate, I can post this for review.

I aim to keep the article factual, neutral, and free of promotional tone, and I respect Wikipedia’s guidelines on COI and sourcing. Please let me know if there is a preferred format or if more independent sources are needed. Thank you in advance for reviewing this request.

Proposed article improvements (COI declared)

[edit]

I am a representative of AussieMite Pty Ltd and declare a conflict of interest. I am not editing the article directly and am requesting review from independent editors before any changes are made. I would like to propose the following improvements for neutrality and sourcing: 1. Introduction clarification Add that AussieMite is an Australian yeast-based savoury spread produced by AussieMite Pty Ltd and belongs to the same category as products such as Vegemite and Marmite. 2. Ownership Clarify current operation by AussieMite Pty Ltd without changing historical founder attribution unless supported by independent reliable sources. 3. Product description Add sourced information regarding formulation including maize-derived ingredients and vitamin fortification (B vitamins and iron), where supported by independent references. 4. Neutrality Ensure wording remains neutral and based only on verifiable secondary sources. I welcome feedback from editors regarding sourcing requirements or suggested improvements before any edits are made. ResearchPageEditor (talk) 07:05, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
