Taking office

- Well observed, John. I fixed this now. The official list at the site confuses the election date with the date of taking office after 1847. It becomes evident at the resignation of Levi S. Chatfield on December 8, 1853, when Ogden Hoffman had been elected already on November 8, but was NOT YET in office. Besides, Cuomo is shown on the NYAG site on a picture taking the oath on January 1, 2007. Kraxler (talk) 19:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

The official name of this position is "Attorney General of New York".

New York Attorney General → Attorney General of New York – Opening this discussion procedurally given the recent copy/paste move and PRODing of the other page in attempt to move it by NewYorkRepub100. This has also been mentioned by an editor above, but since it appears other states follow the State Attorney general format, I would consider any move to be controversial and in need of discussion. - Support Attorney General of New York because that is the appropriate title for this article about the political office. People also know it or call it as the "New York Attorney General" but it should be titled as the "Attorney General of New York". I agree with Necrothesp that the article title is "clumsy" as the user says. - Oppose. Not commonname, but just manner of speech, much like "US president" vs. "President of the United States. Walrasiad (talk) 06:59, 24 November 2025 (UTC).
- Since when is a "manner of speech" a way to ignore the WP:COMMONNAME. The short name is used by a preponderance reliable sources. Even the official website refers to the office as "New York State Attorney General", not Attorney General of New York. "President of the United States" is also the WP:COMMONNAME over "US president" anyway and by this logic United States Attorney General should be moved to Attorney General of the United States as that's also the WP:OFFICIALNAME estar8806 (talk) ★ 16:19, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- "Manner of speech" means it is casually used in a running phrase usually preceding a personal name, e.g. "New York Attorney General Letitia James" much like "US President Donald Trump". Article title should be the stand-alone office, not part of a phrase with a personal name. Your ngram hits are just picking up partial phrases, and just from recent news cycles. I'd be more comfortable if you had proposed "New York State Attorney General", but this is a historical article that covers the office before New York was a state.
