  • @Noleander: Article newly GA'd and long enough. The copyvio issue is as mentioned, with no detected plagiarism aside from the flagged quotations. The second hook is verified and mentioned directly inline (I went ahead and added "fistfights" verbatim). The original hook is... a bit iffy about "mentioned inline", plus the article mentions the Du Bois really only began negatively talking about it in 1901 (which makes 14 years, not 20). Passing ALT1 and rejecting ALT0 for now, subject to revision. Juxlos (talk) 00:06, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the review. Regarding ALT0, you are correct that sources mention various durations of the feud: The "start" year is fuzzy: Some say 1895-1915 (20 yrs); or 1901-1915 (14 yrs) or 1903-1915 (12 yrs). So maybe ALT1 is indeed safer. Noleander (talk) 00:11, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

'Harlan told Washington'?

[edit]

Perhaps 'Du Bois told Washington'? Otherwise it wouldn't support or be relevant for the previous sentence that claims that Du Bois originally agreed with Washington. It also seems impossible for Harlan to have told Washington anything, because Harlan was born after Washington's death. Anonymous44 (talk) 00:10, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for identifying that mistake. I have fixed it. Noleander (talk) 01:36, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

New material needs to conform to WP guidelines, article style conventions, & FA requirements

[edit]

@Bmaye207: - Thanks for taking an interest in the article. Can you please update your new material to conform to WP guidelines, article style conventions, & FA requirements? It is a WP:Featured Article (FA) so all new material must be of the highest quality. Examples:

  1. Citation has errors: Washington, Booker T. (September 18th, 1895). Atlanta Compromise. Cotton States and International Exposition (Atlanta, Georgia). {{cite book}}: Empty citation (help): Check date values in: |year= (help)CS1 maint: year (link)
  2. Citation for Du Bois 1903 (Souls of Black Folk) is conflicting with an existing cite for the same book ... article can have only one.
  3. Cites shuld be at the end of every single sentence (although sometimes if 2 sentences are essentially on the same topic, a single cite after the 2nd is okay)
  4. All cites must specify a page number (or numbers) ... I think your 2 new cites are referenced to an entire book/essay .. that is not acceptable for Featured Articles.
  5. Generally, all cites should be to secondary source (by scholars). Primary sources (writings by Du Bois or Wash) are only acceptable in rare situations, where the article is quoting from one of them. So, you'll need to find academic sources that support statements like "Both Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois tried to resolve the societal issue of the African-American Community in different ways ..." you cannot cite books by DB and Wash for analytical statements like that.
  6. The new material essentially repeats what is found already elsewhere in the article ... that kind of duplication is not permitted.

If you need more details, or links to the relevant WP guidelines, let me know, thanks. Noleander (talk) 01:34, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

... and I know you are new to WP, and I don't want to be harsh, so look at it this way: if you are creating a new article on a sort of minor topic, you can write just about anything and no one will complain :-) Of course, you want to follow the WP guidelines, but there is a lot of leeway in that situation.
In contrast, you've selected very high-visibility, high-quality articles to edit ... no problem, anyone is allowed to edit any article. But the standards are much higher for such articles, and so you'll get more attention and push back from other editors. Not because I'm trying to scare you away, but we all need to work together to keep the gold star on these FA (Featured) articles. Thanks. Noleander (talk) 01:40, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your feedback. I will withdraw the edit and focus more on a lower class article where I can place academic sources with exact page citations and avoid repeating content that already is there. Thanks again for helping me learn the ropes. Bmaye207 (talk) 21:04, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Bmaye207 - No worries. Lord knows I made plenty of mistakes when I started :-)
Yeah, it is more peaceful to work in low-visibility articles when you are starting. Over the months and years, you start to get the hang of the guidelines and conventions. When you do want to start editing high-visibility articles, be sure to read the article carefully first, and make note of the style conventions, and try to follow those. Unfortunately, WP does not have one single, global styles for formatting citations, so I cannot give you a fixed pattern that always works. Instead, you have to look at the style convention already in the article, and mimic it.
Feel free to post a note on my Talk page if you have any questions or need help with anything. Good luck!
PS : I'm not singling you out for special attention. It is just that I wrote the W. E. B. Du Bois article and the Atlanta Compromise article, and so I got automatically notified of your changes. Noleander (talk) 21:18, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
