[edit]Is the arts centre a peculiarly British institution? Are there equivalents elsewhere in the world? There is certainly nothing much like a British arts centre in western Canada. The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in Vancouver probably comes closest, but it doesn't host artists visiting from other regions or countries in the way that, say, Chapter Arts Centre or the mac does.
