Independent implementations

Android Auto as such is a mobile application by Google. But it is worth mentioning that it uses a proprietary protocol based on AOA (https://source.android.com/devices/accessories/protocol), SSL and Protobuf for communication with the headunit. And that there are independent implementations of the protocol (https://github.com/f1xpl/openauto, https://github.com/tomasz-grobelny/AACS) of varied maturity. Countries

Should the kernel be assumed to be Linux (or maybe ONX)? Best first guess..

In my previous edit at QNX I assumed Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to neither use QNX. A dangerous assumption as CarPlay does use QNX.. (not iOS' kernel. Do not want to make same mistake here, but as Linux kernel could (is?) good enough (not sure hard-real-time is needed and well Linux could be..). There are some sites that say QNX, I'm not sure if reliable (not official) but rather speculation as BlackBerry has Android compatibility.

Kernel to what? Android Auto is not an operating system. It's just the head unit sending input to and receiving video from an app running on an Android device. --uKER (talk) 17:55, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

List of Manufacturers and Models that support Android Auto

Criticism section incomplete

Emerging evidence of the safety of infotainment systems in driving shows that any level of distracted driving increases the possiblity of accidents. https://www.iamroadsmart.com/campaign-pages/end-customer-campaigns/infotainment Whereas voice control is safer than touchscreen, no in car infotainment systems directed at drivers is safer than not having one at all. Driving Mode deprecated?

I believe the info about Driving Mode is outdated.

Android Auto has not been replaced by Android Assistant Driving Mode. It's still there and being updated. To the best of my knowledge, Driving Mode has been deprecated.

Android Auto is still a system app. It's not listed in the main apps menu, but it's still running as a system app when connected to the car. HSukePup (talk) 15:39, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
