How many?

[edit]
In any given generation, there are only a few Allamahs.

More detail please - and it would be great if "samples" were presented:

  • 1800 - 3; Mr. X, Mr. Y, Mr. Z
  • 1850 - 4; Mr. A, Mr. B, Mr. C, Mr. D
  • 1900 - 3; Mr. C, Mr. E, Mr. F

Also, who decides who may carry this title? What has happened in the past when some guy desiring gravitas has started using the title unjustly? What's the proportion of clerics among the Allamahs? Tempshill (talk) 18:40, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Secular v. Clerics

[edit]
Those holding the title "allamah" surpass all other clerics such as ayatollahs and hojatoleslams.

Presumably this is only among the Shia? Could someone who's sure mention so in the article? Tempshill (talk) 18:44, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
