I am having trouble seeing how the underpromotion at move 7 (fxg1=N) is mate when the rook can capture the newly aquired knight (h1xg1). White is still in a difficult situation, but it is not mate. White can trade queens if the chance remains (though unlikely) but white is up a piece. Am I missing something with the rook capturing the knight?

The underpromotion isn't mate, but if the rook takes on g1, Bg4+ wins the white queen. More detail on the continuations is given under Lasker Trap. WarmasterKron 10:10, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
