According to UAF's Alaska Native Language Center (ANLC): "On March 20, 1997, the Tanana Chiefs Conference adopted Resolution 97-35, designating Athabascan as the correct spelling and requesting that other entities follow that policy. In respect for that resolution, ANLC has adopted Athabascan as its preferred spelling."
As a museum professional who has worked in Interior Alaska for nearly 30 years on the traditional lands of the Athabascan/Dene people of the Lower Tanana River, I propose that any articles in Wikipedia, with this page as the starting point, should use the spelling adopted by and recommended by the actual people themselves. As a novice Wikipedia editor, I would like to start this proposed change through this talk page and follow internal protocols for making a sweeping change such as this. 907trekkie71 (talk) 15:35, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Do you know if this has some usage outside of self-declaration? If so I think your change would be good. If not (I.E. if the common usage is overwhelmingly Athabaskan) then Wiki-norms would point to keeping it as is. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 15:57, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
SUPPORT. Agree that the title "Alaskan Athabaskans" should be updated to the preferred spelling "Athabascan." There are reliable, current published sources that support the "c" spelling. I would also support updating the spelling in WP articles referring to the Alaskan Athabascans.Bcbc24 (talk) 18:00, 26 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
