According to my DVD, both teams wore white shorts; Manchester United's shorts had black and red trim, while Everton's had blue trim. Furthermore, oddly, both teams wore black socks, although Everton's were hooped with blue while United's had red tops. Lineup image vs description mismatch

The positions listed next to the lineups don't match up with the image. Everton are shown playing a 4-4-1-1 in the image, while the positions described in the lineups correspond to a 3-4-3. Now, positions are often somewhat open to interpretation as to whether somebody is, for example, a wide midfielder or a winger, but that doesn't cover the discrepancies here: Unsworth is shown at centre-back in the image but listed as left midfield in text, Stuart is shown as a second striker/attacking central midfielder in the image but listed in the text as playing right midfield.

The Manchester United lineup at least mostly matches the image in formation terms (close enough to put down as minor interpretation differences), but again the positions of individual players are swapped around - the image shows Keane playing right midfield with McClair as an advanced central midfielder and Hughes as the central striker. The text lineups list Keane in central midfield with Hughes on the right and McClair as the only forward.

Of course in reality formations are fluid and can be altered over the course of a match, but if the article's going to attempt to show "the lineups" then it should probably settle on some consistent idea of what they were for both the visual and text representations. Maybe somebody can dig up a contemporary source which actually describes the formations rather than just listing the players (I took a quick look and didn't find one, but haven't spent a lot of time on it)? As an Everton fan I'd say the image _feels_ more realistic than the positions listed in the text, but I'm not making any edits based on 'feels'. ~2026-27570-94 (talk) 07:32, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
