Smudge the Blades is a Canadian sports comedy-drama film, directed by Cody Lightning and slated for release in 2026. The film centres on the Treaty 6 Blades, an Indigenous youth ice hockey team.[1]
The cast includes Ed Helms, Paulina Alexis, Jana Schmieding, Tom Carey, David Lawrence, Gillian Anderson, Treycen Wuttunnee, Isaiah Kakepetum, River Rayne Thomas, Elijah James Lee Moar, Ezekial James Mekanak, Tyler Halcrow and Lightning in a supporting role as the team's coach.[1]
Production
[edit]The film first announced casting for Indigenous actors to play the hockey team in 2024,[2] and was shot in Edmonton, Alberta, in spring 2025.[3]
Release
[edit]The film is scheduled to premiere in the Centrepiece program at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.[4]
