Pipe Hall is a Grade II Listed[1] former Regency style town house along Hall Street, Bilston in England.
History
[edit]The first building on the Pipe Hall site was a timber-framed wattle and daub manor house built between 1396 and 1397 by the Pipe family.[2] It was a half-timbered house with an orchard when Sir Richard Pype lived there in 1578,[3] and it was known as "Hume's Tenement" by 1699.[2] The ruins of the first Pipe Hall were replaced with a residential brick building during the 1760s.[2]
The third, and current Pipe Hall was constructed around 1810 in the Regency style,[3] and it was a girls' school by 1869.[4] It next became the Pipe Hall Hotel.[3] It was Grade II Listed on 20 June 1952.[1] Around the same time it was Grade II Listed, Pipe Hall became a public house known as The Tudor House during the 1950s, and The Carousel Inn during the 1960s.[3]
In the 1980s, the building was converted into Top Cats Nightclub and the porch was altered during this time.[1] It was subsequently abandoned during the 1990s and was placed on the Heritage at Risk Register.[4] It was last used by Gavin's Sports Bar until it closed in July 2009 after the murder of the landlord Swinder Singh Batth,[5] and Pipe Hall was purchased by the West Midlands Combined Authority on 7 February 2020;[4][6] it is no longer on the Heritage at Risk Register.
