State Route 586 (SR 586) is a north–south state highway located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The highway's southern terminus is at a T-intersection with SR 146 in the unincorporated community of Nashport. The highway's northern terminus is at a Y-intersection with SR 13 in Mount Vernon.

Route description

SR 586 begins at a T-intersection with SR 146 in the unincorporated community of Nashport, located in Licking Township, Muskingum County. From this point, the highway heads northwestward through rural terrain, passing through a landscape characterized by rolling hills, farmland, and scattered woodlands typical of the region. The route is known locally as Black Run Road in its initial stretch through Muskingum County.

After traveling approximately 3.1 miles (5.0 km) northward from its southern terminus, SR 586 reaches an interchange with SR 16 in Jackson Township, Muskingum County, near the unincorporated community of Marne. This interchange provides connections to Coshocton to the west and Newark to the east. The junction with SR 16 represents the first major intersection along the route and serves as a key access point for travelers utilizing SR 586 as a connector between the two corridors.

Continuing northward, SR 586 crosses into Licking County and enters Fallsbury Township. In this section, the highway is known as Pleasant Valley Road and traverses a predominantly agricultural area with scattered residences. At approximately mile 10.99, the route intersects SR 79, which connects the community of Nellie to the west with the city of Newark to the east. This intersection provides another important crossroads for regional travel.

North of the SR 79 junction, SR 586 continues through the rural landscape of northeastern Licking County, passing through or near small communities such as Hickman and Rain Rock. The highway maintains its character as a two-lane rural roadway, winding through valleys and over gently rolling terrain as it approaches the Knox County line.

Upon entering Knox County, SR 586 assumes the name Martinsburg Road and heads generally northward toward the incorporated village of Martinsburg. The village, located in Clay Township, was formed in the mid-19th century from the merger of two smaller settlements on either side of what is now the main east-west road through town. SR 586 enters Martinsburg from the northwest, approaching what was historically the village square.

At approximately mile 19.26, SR 586 reaches its junction with US 62 and SR 541 in the center of Martinsburg. Here, SR 586 begins a brief concurrency with US 62, heading eastward along West Liberty Street. At this same intersection, SR 541 begins its eastward course toward Utica, while US 62 provides connections westward to Utica and eastward to Danville. After traveling approximately 0.13 miles (0.21 km) eastward with US 62, SR 586 turns northward at the intersection of North Market Street and Mechanic Street, ending its concurrency with US 62 and resuming its northward course out of Martinsburg.

North of Martinsburg, SR 586 continues its journey through the rural landscape of southeastern Knox County. The highway passes through a mix of farmland, pastures, and wooded areas as it makes its way toward the county seat of Mount Vernon. The terrain becomes increasingly rolling as the route approaches the Kokosing River valley.

SR 586 enters the city of Mount Vernon and terminates at a Y-intersection with SR 13 on Newark Road at approximately mile 29.98. Mount Vernon, the county seat of Knox County, is a city of approximately 17,000 residents located along the Kokosing River. The city was platted in 1805 and named for the plantation estate of George Washington. The intersection with SR 13 provides access to downtown Mount Vernon and connections to other regional destinations.

Throughout its entire 29.98 miles (48.25 km) length, SR 586 is maintained by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The highway is predominantly a two-lane, undivided roadway with bituminous concrete surfacing and surfaced shoulders typically 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, though some sections feature 5 feet (1.5 m) shoulders. No portion of SR 586 is included as a component of the National Highway System, a network of routes identified as most important for the nation's economy, mobility and defense.<ref name="NHS">National Highway System: Ohio (PDF) (Map). History

SR 586 was designated in 1939. It was established along the routing between SR 146 in Nashport and SR 13 in Mount Vernon that it utilizes today. The creation of SR 586 provided a formal north-south state highway connection through a largely rural area of central Ohio that had previously been served only by county and township roads.
