Namabusi is a settlement in Kenya's Busia County (Swahili: Magharibi). It lies in the Bunyala area, near the shores of Lake Victoria, and its economy is centred on fishing and agriculture; the settlement has a designated fish-landing beach.
Geography
[edit]Namabusi lies within the Lake Victoria basin at an elevation of approximately 1,140 metres above sea level. Its proximity to the lake has shaped both the economic activities and the environmental conditions of the settlement.[1]
Economy
[edit]Fishing is a significant economic activity in Namabusi, whose beach is recognised as one of the fish-landing sites in the Kenyan portion of Lake Victoria. Fishing supports local livelihoods and forms part of the broader Lake Victoria fisheries economy.[2]
Education
[edit]Namabusi is served by several local schools, including St Mary's ACK Namabusi Secondary School. Schools in the area, including this one, have periodically been affected by flooding.[3][4]
Flooding and environment
[edit]Namabusi is vulnerable to floodings caused by rising water levels in Lake Victoria, which has periodically disrupted transportation, schooling and other local activities. The settlement and its surrounding waters have also been affected by water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant that has caused problems for the wider Lake Victoria fishery.[5]
