NPK International Inc. (formerly Newpark Resources, Inc.) is a worldwide provider of value-added drilling fluids systems and composite matting systems used in oilfield and other commercial markets. The company changed its name from Newpark Resources, Inc. to NPK International Inc. effective December 9, 2024, with its NYSE ticker symbol changing from NR to NPKI on December 19, 2024.[2] Industry partners include American Petroleum Institute, Independent Petroleum Association of America - IPAA, US Chamber of Commerce et al.[3] The company was founded in 1932 and is based in The Woodlands, Texas.[4] In 2013, the company was awarded as one of the Top Customer Satisfaction companies in the Annual EnergyPoint Research Global Oil & Gas Industry Survey.[5] The enterprise value of the company (As of February 2013[update]) is $1.14 billion.[1]
Operations
[edit]The company operates its business through three segments globally, mainly in regions including North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In detail, Mats and Integrated Service Segment provides services for the United States, and Environmental Service Segment, which was sold for $100 million to Ecoserv LLC in 2014,[6] serves United States Gulf Coast.[7]
On December 31, 2012, the company acquired operations of Alliance Drilling Fluids, LLC.[8] In June 2013, the wholly owned subsidiary of the company, Newpark Drilling Fluids, expanded in Katy. It opened a 106,000-square-foot office and lab space with a volume capacity of over 140 employees.[9]
Defence applications
[edit]NPK's Dura-Base advanced composite matting system has been adopted by the Australian Defence Force as an expedient airfield surface for austere and remote locations.[10] In November 2024, Royal Australian Air Force engineers constructed a 2,000-square-metre Dura-Base apron at RAAF Base Tindal and operated an F-35A of No. 75 Squadron from it, the first known use of Dura-Base beneath a fifth-generation fighter.[10] In April 2025, Babcock Australasia announced the fast-track delivery of Dura-Base mats to the RAAF, supplied through its in-country agent JWA Composite Matting, as an alternative to the AM2 aluminium matting used by the RAAF since the 1960s.[11][12] During Exercise Bronze Croc 26 in September 2026, a P-8A Poseidon became the first heavy aircraft to traverse Dura-Base matting under power, on a taxiway at RAAF Base Tindal built in about 12 hours with no ground preparation.[13]
