MaViGun or MAVIGUN is a proposed capital-region and urban-corridor concept in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The name is derived from Machilipatnam, Vijayawada and Guntur, the three cities associated with the proposal.[1]
The proposal has been promoted by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSR Congress Party as an alternative to the Amaravati-centred capital model in Andhra Pradesh.[2] As of July 2026, MaViGun remained a political proposal and had not been officially implemented as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.[1]
Background
[edit]The capital of Andhra Pradesh has been a major political issue after the bifurcation of the former state of Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati has been central to the state's capital development debate.[3]
Proposal
[edit]The MaViGun proposal refers to a corridor linking Machilipatnam, Vijayawada and Guntur. In April 2026, Jagan Mohan Reddy described the corridor as a 110 km stretch connecting Machilipatnam port, Vijayawada international airport and Guntur through a national highway. He argued that the stretch could be declared a capital corridor and that administrative buildings could be developed along it.[4]
Jagan Mohan Reddy and YSRCP leaders have described the corridor as having existing infrastructure advantages, including road, rail, air and port connectivity because of the three cities and nearby facilities.[5][6]
Political debate
[edit]In July 2026, Jagan Mohan Reddy said the YSR Congress Party would make MaViGun a key issue in the next Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election and present it as a choice between MaViGun and Amaravati.[7] The proposal drew criticism from leaders supporting the Amaravati model, who described it as another change in YSRCP's position on the state capital issue.[8]
Status
[edit]As of July 2026, MaViGun had not been officially implemented as Andhra Pradesh's capital region. News reports described it as a YSR Congress Party proposal and a planned election-campaign issue.[1][7]
