The Lusail Expressway (Arabic: طريق لوسيل السريع) is a major arterial road and expressway in Qatar that connects central Doha with the planned coastal city of Lusail.[1] Constructed as part of Qatar's Expressway Programme managed by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal),[2] the project spans 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi)[1] and features multi-level interchanges, marine crossing bridges, and major utility infrastructure.[3]
Route description
[edit]The Lusail Expressway stretches from the West Bay financial district in Doha northward to Lusail City.[1] The main carriageway consists of four to eight lanes in each direction along key segments.[4]
Key features and major multi-level interchanges along the highway include:
- Al Wahda Interchange (Arch Interchange): A three-level interchange[1] featuring an at-grade signalized intersection, underpass, and flyover near West Bay, highlighted by the 99-meter-tall Al Wahda Arches landmark.[5]
- Al Gassar Interchange: A four-level interchange[1] comprising a signalized intersection, underpass, tunnel, and flyover providing access to the Katara Cultural Village and Al Qassar area.[1]
- Pearl Interchange: A three-level interchange[1] providing direct access to The Pearl-Qatar.[1]
- Marine Bridges: Two primary canal crossings, including the North Canal Crossing Bridge (6 lanes in each direction) connecting to Lusail and the South Canal Crossing Bridge (8 lanes in each direction) located between the Al Gassar and Pearl interchanges.[1]
History and construction
[edit]Construction on the project officially began on 21 May 2012 under Ashghal's Expressway Programme.[1] The primary contractor for the development was South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction (HDEC),[6] with engineering supervision consultancy provided by CDM Smith.[7] Local sub-contractors, including Boom Construction Company[8] and Traffic Tech (Gulf),[2] carried out major civil, road, intelligent transportation systems (ITS),[2] and utility works.[3]
The total cost of the development was QR 4.998 billion.[1] Main traffic lanes opened to the public in late 2017, with final landscaping and infrastructure works completed in subsequent months.[1]
