Long Jinbao (Chinese: 龙金宝; born 7 November 2000) is a Chinese competition speed climber. He won the speed silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Bern,[1] and individual silver and relay gold in speed at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.[2][3] A World Cup gold medallist at Chamonix in 2022,[4] he represented China in the men's speed event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[5]

Career

[edit]

2022: World Cup breakthrough

[edit]

2022 was Long's breakthrough season. With China back on the international circuit, he finished on the podium at three World Cups in a row, at Villars, Chamonix and Edinburgh.[6] At Villars he beat Indonesia's Veddriq Leonardo in the small final for bronze, stopping the clock at 5.16 seconds after Leonardo slipped. The result completed a Chinese sweep of the podium alongside Long Jianguo and Wu Peng.[7] The next week in Chamonix, he took his first World Cup gold with 5.11 seconds in the final against Spain's Erik Noya Cardona.[4]

2023: World silver and Asian Games

[edit]

At the 2023 World Championships in Bern, Long made the men's speed final but false-started, so the gold went to Italy's Matteo Zurloni in 5.56 seconds. Both finalists earned quota places for Paris 2024.[1][8]

Two months later, at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, he took the individual silver after faulting in the final against Iran's Reza Alipour, who won in 5.30 seconds.[3] The next day Long joined Wu Peng, Wang Xinshang and Zhang Liang in the speed relay, where China beat defending champions Indonesia for the country's first Asian Games title in the event. Indonesia lost their anchor leg when Kiromal Katibin false-started and was disqualified.[2]

2024: Paris Olympics

[edit]

At the men's speed event at Paris 2024, Long lost to defending world champion Zurloni in the qualification round and missed the cut, while his teammate Wu Peng took the silver medal.[5]
