Cane sugar mills and sugar refinery are commonly known as pabrik gula in Indonesian and abbreviated as PG. The private (partikulir) and state-owned cane sugar mill and sugar refinery in Indonesia began to emerge after the start of the era of liberalism during the Dutch East Indies colonial period (1870), with the introduction of Land Lease Rights for use for 70 years. Previously, a number of simple sugar factories had been established to process the sugar cane harvest, which was included in the commodities included in the Cultuurstelsel program. Most Dutch East Indies colonial cane sugar mill and sugar refinery located in Java, hence it rises such popular culture such as in Sugar Mill, an Indonesian supernatural horror film.
