Levinsky College of Education

Levinsky College of Education was an institute of higher learning that taught prospective teachers and was located in Tel Aviv, Israel, and was established in 1911 by the Hovevei Zion organization. Over time it grew into an important center of teacher training and was very influential in promoting Hebrew language education in Israel. The institute later grew its academic and research programs and became part of the Levinsky-Wingate Academic College.

Founding and early history

Levinsky College of Education was founded by the Zionist group Hovevei Zion in 1911 in Neve Tzedek, which at that time was a suburb of Jaffa and today is an area of Tel Aviv. The college, named after Elhanan Levinsky, a member of Hovevei Zion who promoted Hebrew language and culture, became the first teachers' training college in Israel to teach in Hebrew. In 1938, due to expansion, the college was relocated to Ben Yehuda Street, Tel Aviv.

Academic development

The college evolved from a seminary for teachers to become an educational institution that provides undergraduate and graduate courses in education. The programs offered by the college include Bachelor of Education in early childhood, elementary, secondary and special education as well as Master of Education in teaching and learning, early childhood education, special education, language education and music education among others.

Current institution and merger

Currently, Levinsky College of Education is a component of Levinsky-Wingate Academic College, an amalgamation of the two colleges. The Levinsky campus, located in Tel Aviv, still specializes in the field of education and teachers' preparation and provides undergraduate, graduate degrees and certification courses in education and teaching. The new academic college has also established campuses in Wingate and Eilat.
