Ilva Tare (born 19 April 1976) is an Albanian journalist, television presenter and communications expert based in Washington, D.C. She is a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Europe Center, where she hosts the interview series Balkans Debrief. She previously worked in broadcast journalism in Albania, including as a television presenter and news executive.

Early life and education

Tare was born in Tirana, Albania. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Tirana. In 2008, she graduated with a Master of Science in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics.[2][3]

Career

Broadcasting in Albania

Tare began her career in journalism in Albania. She worked at Ora News Albania for eight years, serving as Director of Information and hosting the political talk show Tonight Ilva Tare until her departure in 2018.[4]

She later joined Euronews Albania, where she served as Head of News and hosted the current affairs programme Ilva Now. Her work included coverage of politics, human rights, gender equality and anti-corruption. In 2021, the Albanian Association of Journalists presented Tare with a lifetime achievement award, citing her contributions to broadcast journalism and the development of private media.[5]

In 2021, Tare announced the conclusion of Ilva Now and her departure from Euronews Albania to relocate to the United States.[6]

Atlantic Council

Following her relocation to Washington, D.C., Tare became a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Europe Center. Since 2022, she has hosted Balkans Debrief, an online interview and podcast series covering politics in the Western Balkans, European integration and U.S. policy toward Southeast Europe.[7]

Personal life

Tare is married to Eduard Selami, a politician and former chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania.[8] They have two children and live in the United States.[9]
