The Hanoi derby (Vietnamese: Derby Hà Nội), also known as Capital derby (Vietnamese: Derby thủ đô), refers to football matches between Hanoi FC and The Cong–Viettel in Hanoi, first contested in 2007. Both clubs are among the most successful football clubs in Vietnam.[1] Hanoi FC plays at the Hàng Đẫy Stadium and The Cong–Viettel at the Mỹ Đình National Stadium.
History
[edit]The rivalry dates back to 2007, when Hanoi FC, then known as T&T Hanoi, first faced The Cong in the 2008 Vietnamese Cup. The Cong drew 0–0 with T&T Hanoi before winning 5–4 on penalties.[2] Their meetings in the 2009 V-League season were already described by Vietnamese media as a derby of the capital.[3]
The rivalry was interrupted following the 2009 season. On 25 September 2009, the Ministry of Defence withdrew the Thể Công designation after 55 years. The V.League slot was subsequently transferred to Thanh Hoa, while Viettel continued its football programme separately.[4] Viettel subsequently rebuilt its senior team through the lower divisions, eventually returning to V.League 1 for the 2019 season.[5]
Viettel's return to the top flight brought the two clubs together again. Their meeting in the third round of the 2019 V.League 1 season marked the revival of the derby after nearly a decade.[6]
In November 2023, the Ministry of Defence restored the Thể Công designation to Viettel, and the club was renamed The Cong–Viettel from the 2023–24 season.[7]
