Early life

[edit]

Pinochet was born in Cauquenes in 1849 to Gregorio Pinochet Benítez and Dolores Espinoza Plaza de los Reyes. He studied at the Instituto Nacional and qualified as a lawyer on 12 November 1873.[1]

He married Malvina Plaza de los Reyes, with whom he had two children. In addition to practicing law, Pinochet worked as a journalist. He founded the newspaper El Alba in Concepción and contributed to several newspapers and magazines.[1]

Pinochet also pursued an academic career. He taught public law at the Liceo de Concepción from 29 July 1878 until his resignation in 1886 and served as substitute professor of civil law at the same institution.[1]

Political career

A member of the Liberal Party, Pinochet served as mayor of Cauquenes before entering national politics.[1]

He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Santiago for the 1885–1888 legislative term. During this period, he served on the permanent committee on elections and petitions and as a substitute member of the permanent committee on war and navy. He was also a member of the Conservative Commission during the 1887–1888 parliamentary recess.[1]

Pinochet was reelected for Santiago for the 1888–1891 term. He served as first vice president of the Chamber of Deputies from 16 November 1889 until April 1891 and was a member of the permanent committee on education and welfare.[1]

During the Chilean Civil War of 1891, Pinochet joined the congressional opposition to President José Manuel Balmaceda.[1]

After returning to parliamentary politics, he was elected deputy for Rere and Puchacay for the 1894–1897 term. During this period, he served on the permanent committee on ecclesiastical affairs.[1]

Pinochet was reelected for Rere and Puchacay for the 1897–1900 legislative term and served on the permanent committee on constitution, legislation and justice.[1]

President Federico Errázuriz Echaurren appointed Pinochet Minister of Industry and Public Works on 2 September 1899. He remained in office until 30 October 1899.[1]

Pinochet died in Santiago in October 1899, aged 50, while still serving in public office. He was buried at the General Cemetery of Santiago on 29 October 1899.[1]
