G.D.N is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language biographical film. It was directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, who co-wrote the screenplay along with R. Madhavan. Madhavan produced the film under his Tricolour Films production company in association with Varghese Moolan Pictures. It stars Madhavan in the titular role along with Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Priyamani, Dushara Vijayan, and Vinay Rai in supporting roles. The film is based on the life of inventor and engineer Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu.[2][3]
Plot
[edit]The film begins in the later years of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu's life, set in the late 1950s, when he is locked in a battle with the Income Tax Department, which demands that Naidu pay exorbitant tax. The movie later moves to flashback, which recounts Naidu's story from his teenage years. Naidu develops an interest in a motorcycle, which he came across for the first time when a British official drove one to his village. He later works odd jobs to save money and succeeds in buying it.
The story follows Naidu working in a cotton mill, and later trying to start one himself. He later starts the Universal Motor Service, which grows into one of the large private bus service operators during the era. It showcases his inventions like India's first indigenous electric motor, the "Rasant" electric razor, a cheaper five-valve radio, India's first petrol engine car, amongst others. His fight against the British Raj earlier, and the battle with tax authorities post-independence, forms the crux of the remaining story.

[edit]The film's trailer was released on 6 July 2026.[4] Originally, it was scheduled for release on 17 July 2026, but was postponed to avoid box office clash with Jana Nayagan.[5] It was released in theatres on 7 August 2026.[6]

Reception
[edit]The film received mixed reviews from critics. The NDTV gave the film 2.5/5, while praising the film's story line as being faithful to that of G.D. Naidu's life and Govind Vasantha's background score. It also praised the production for bringing the early 20th century to life and the performances of the main characters, while criticizing the lack of emotional depth.[7] The Indian Express similarly rated the film 2.5/5, praising the storyline, while criticizing the narration of the story.[8] The Hindu appreciated the background score and the performance of the lead actors, while criticizing the abrupt time transitions, undercooked emotional moments, and a rushed timeline.[9]
