Flavia Zucco
Flavia Zucco is an Italian biologist, researcher and advocate for women in science. She is a former Research Director at the Italian National Research Council , founding member and first president of European Society of Toxicology In Vitro.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Zucco studied biology at the University of Naples Federico II, graduating in 1969. During her university studies she carried out research in genetics at the Institute of Genetics and Biophysics in Naples.[2][3]
Career
[edit]Zucco joined the CNR as a researcher in 1971 and later became Research Director at the Institute of Neurobiology and Molecular Medicine in Rome.[1][3]
Her early research concerned cellular differentiation. After moving to Rome, she worked on the development of in vitro methods for toxicology as alternatives or complements to animal testing.[2] She coordinated the European research projects: Anim.Al.See under the European Union's Fifth Framework Programme and Liintop under the Sixth Framework Programme.[1][4] Zucco has authored with approximately 80 scientific publications and more than 100 congress communications.[1] In 1991, Zucco founded Celltox, the Italian Association of in vitro Toxicology, serving as its first president.[3] In 1994, she was among the founders of the European Society of Toxicology in Vitro and served as its first president from 1994 to 1998.[3][5]
Women in science
[edit]Beginning in the late 1980s, Zucco became active in promoting women's participation in science and addressing gender inequality in research.[3]
She was involved with the Coordinamento Nazionale Donne e Scienza from 1988 and served on the CNR Commission for the Promotion of Women Scientists. In 2003, she co-founded the association Donne e Scienza and became its first president.[3][6][7]
She was also a member of the board of the European Platform of Women Scientists from 2004 to 2008 and was among the founding members of the organisation.[1]
Selected publications
[edit]Zucco has contributed to publications covering toxicology, bioethics, gender equality and scientific assessment. Her work includes contributions to the European GenisLab project and publications and gender stereotypes in research.[8][9]
She also contributed to Vent'anni di Donne e Scienza, a volume documenting the first twenty years of the Donne e Scienza association.[7]
