Farida Hafiz qizy Rustamova^[1] (Azerbaijani: Fəridə Xafiz qızı Rüstəmova; Russian: Фарида́ Хафи́з кызы́ Руста́мова; born 1992) is a Russian journalist of Azerbaijani descent.^[2]

Biography

Rustamova was born in Moscow in 1992.^[2] From 2012 to 2014, while she was studying in university, she was employed at Gazeta.ru.^[3]

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rustamova has been working as an independent journalist^[4] through her Substack publications Faridaily^[5] and Пояснительная записка, Poyasnitelnaya zapiska ("explanatory note"),^[6] together with Maxim Tovkailo, publishing texts in both Russian and English.^[7] She previously worked for Vedomosti,^[8] Forbes Russia [ru],^[9] RBK Group,^[10] BBC News Russian, Meduza, and TV Rain.^[4]

Professional work

Rustamova has published a number of investigative pieces^[11] on President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle, which have been cited by world-known mass media.^[12]^[13]^[14]^[15]^[16]

Her articles have appeared in The New York Times,^[17] The Daily Telegraph,^[12] El Confidencial,^[13] The Moscow Times,^[18] The Blueprint,^[19] on the websites of the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute^[20] and OpenDemocracy^[21] and others.

Awards

Rustamova is a two-time winner of the Redkollegia Award:^[22]

in May 2018 for 'The story of how MP Slutsky sexually harassed two Russian journalists'^[23] for BBC News Russian;
in March 2021 along with Svetlana Reiter and Alexander Ershov for the 'From gene bombs to classroom curriculum'^[24] for Meduza.
