XtraMath (sometimes referred to as ExtraMath, Xtra Math, or Extra Math) is a non-profit Seattle-rooted educational technology platform that was founded in 2007. It provides and teaches mathematics[1] to students from grades K–12.[2]

History

[edit]

Xtramath was created in 2007 by a former Microsoft employee named David Jeschke, who recognized that kids were still counting using fingers.[3] It turned into a non-profit in 2009.

Features

[edit]

In XtraMath, educators can create profiles for each students and select any of the skills of addition, substraction, multiplication, and division that they should practice.[4] They can track student progress.[5] If students solve simple math problems, they get points, if they solve harder math problems, they get more points.[6]

Criticism

[edit]

The focus on speed in XtraMath could trigger stress and anxiety from students,[7] especially with ADHD.[1] Because of this, children and teachers have left negative reviews about the website.[8][9][10]
