Webraska Mobile Technologies was a French wireless technology startup and early pioneer in the development and commercialisation of interactive mapping and personal navigation services for mobile devices.[1]
History
[edit]Webraska was founded in 1998 by Jean-Michel Durocher who had a vision for the future of wireless based mapping and navigation. The company aimed to transform mobile devices into personal navigation systems. Webraska's business focused on providing services through wireless carriers, who at the time were launching the first 2G (second generation) networks capable of supporting the mobile internet. The company attracted significant investor interest. In 2000, Webraska secured its first funding round, followed by a €52 million second round in March 2001, led by Apax Partners Funds. This funding was intended to fuel further development of its technology and support global expansion into the Americas and Asia Pacific. In total, Webraska raised $62.7 million over three funding rounds.[2] However, the company faced the harsh realities of the turbulent telecom market in the early 2000s and the fact that the distribution of wireless data services was switching from carriers to the actual device. This challenging environment prompted strategic shifts in its business and revenue models. Ultimately, the journey for Webraska concluded with it being 'acqui-hired' by the acquired by Sanef, the French toll-road operator, in May 2007.
Services and technology
[edit]Webraska's core technology was based upon Internet-Based Distributed Navigation (IBDN), a technology that secured patents in France and Europe.[3] The company's services targeted the real-time mobility needs of wireless subscribers, providing solutions for multi-modal route planning (car, public transit, or pedestrian) as well as a number of real-time traffic services.[4]
Webraska provided location-based technology to wireless carriers through turnkey services as well as a Application Program Interface (API). This API allowed operators and partners to embed core location functionalities—such as geocoding, mapping, routing and local searching—directly into their existing mobile networks and applications.

Webraska deployed its commercial services across numerous European operators including: SFR (France), KPN (Netherlands), Proximus (Belgium) and Airtel (Spain). In an effort to establish itself as a leading global provider of wireless mapping and guidance services, Webraska expanded its operations beyond Europe by opening regional offices in Tokyo, Singapore, and Melbourne and deployed services with Telstra (Australia), M1 (Singapore), Shell Mobile (Hong Kong), China Unicom (China) and NTT Docomo (Japan).[5]
Airflash acquisition
[edit]Webraska officially announced its acquisition of a California based company called AirFlash Inc in September 2001. The merger, valued at approximately $18.3 million, and brought coverage for the US market.[6]
