Vikas Sharma is an Indian novelist and academic who is a professor of English at Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He served as Head of the Department of English from 2021 to 2024 and is the national general secretary of the Association for English Studies of India (AESI).[1][2]

Sharma writes fiction in English and Hindi dealing with institutional governance, contemporary social issues, and youth dynamics. He is the elder brother of Hindi poet, kathavachak, and former Aam Aadmi Party founding member Kumar Vishwas.[3][4][5]

Early life and education

Sharma was born in Pilkhuwa, Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh.[3] His father, Chandra Pal Sharma, was a lecturer at R.S.S. Degree College, Pilkhuwa.[4]

He earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) in English literature from the Institute of Advanced Studies, Meerut University Campus (now Chaudhary Charan Singh University). He completed his M.Phil. at Dr. Hari Singh Gour University in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, followed by a Ph.D. from Kumaun University in Nainital and a D.Litt. from Chaudhary Charan Singh University.[1]

Academic career

Sharma began his academic career at D.A.V. (P.G.) College, Bulandshahr, where he served as assistant professor, associate professor, head of department, and later principal until 2018.[1]

He subsequently joined the postgraduate faculty of the Department of English at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and served as Head of the Department from 2021 to 2024.[1]

As national general secretary of the Association for English Studies of India (AESI), Sharma has represented the organization on issues relating to English-language higher education, including the announcement of the 69th All India English Teachers' Conference and public statements regarding the UGC-NET English syllabus.[2][6][7]

Campus disputes

In 2024, students in the CCS University English Department submitted complaints against Sharma alleging administrative misconduct. A committee constituted by the university's Women's Cell investigated the complaints and concluded that the dispute arose from disagreements over internal examination marks rather than personal misconduct, recommending disciplinary action against the complainants.[8]

In 2026, police investigated alleged fabricated social-media posts concerning Sharma. According to Hindustan, three students later submitted written apologies to police authorities, which Sharma accepted, while proceedings relating to another accused continued.[9]

Literary career

Sharma's first novel, Raah Ke Patthar, was published in Hindi in 2021.[3][1] Set in Moradabad, it explores interfaith relationships and communal harmony.[10]

His later novels include I.A.S. Today (2021), Love's Not Time's Fool (2022), 498A: Fears and Dreams (2022), Medicine: Light in Twilight (2022), Ashes and Fire (2022), Hope Against Hope (2022), Sana (2023), Ideas and Events (2023), Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2023), Media Revolution 2030 (2024), Love and Ego: A Russo-Ukrainian War Saga (2024), Honey Trap (2025), Beyond the Rainbow (2025), and All Her Fires (2025).[1][3]

His fiction has received scholarly discussion in peer-reviewed journals including Creation and Criticism, The Creative Launcher, the Research Journal of English, the International Journal of English and Studies, and the Integral Research Journal, particularly regarding themes of public administration, law, artificial intelligence, ecofeminism, and contemporary youth.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Public commentary

In his role with AESI, Sharma has commented publicly on higher education policy, including calls for greater clarity in the UGC-NET English syllabus.[6]

He has also delivered lectures on literature, university governance, and the National Education Policy 2020 at institutions including Patna University, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, IFTM University, and venues in Deoghar and Indore.[24][25][7][26][10][27][28][29]

Personal life

Sharma married Amita Sharma in 1996.[4] She serves as a professor and Head of the Department of Botany at R.G. College in Meerut.[30] They have a daughter, Stuti Sharma, a psychiatrist who completed her MBBS at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Wardha, Maharashtra, and an MD in Psychiatry at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Belagavi, Karnataka, and currently works at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut.[31]
