Varun Tandon is a self-taught contemporary artist based in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, active since 2015. He creates large-scale portraits depicting Indian freedom fighters, spiritual figures, sports personalities and social causes. He has used materials such as soil, postage stamps, smiley stickers, limestone powder, newspaper pages, burnt matchsticks, spices, milk, cassette tape, etc.
Early life
[edit]Tandon studied at Doaba College, Jalandhar. He worked in Chandigarh before leaving his job to pursue art full-time.[1] He is self-taught and began working with unconventional materials in 2015.
Career
[edit]Tandon left his job in Chandigarh to pursue art full-time. Within two years, he had held exhibitions and workshops using unconventional materials.[2] He created a series of portraits of Indian independence movement figures, including Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and Chandra Shekhar Azad, using burnt matchsticks on thermocol,[2] and later created a portrait of Bhagat Singh using soil brought from his ancestral village of Khatkar Kalan.[3] He made a portrait of hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. by using a hockey stick to move an inked ball across paper,[4] and a portrait of Milkha Singh rendered on feathers.[5] He created a 3D portrait of Subhas Chandra Bose for the 125th anniversary of his birth,[6] and a portrait of architect Le Corbusier made using cement.[7]
He created a portrait of the Hindu deity Shiva using milk, made on the occasion of Mahashivratri.[8] In 2020, on the occasion of the 551st Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev, he created a 6-by-4-foot optical illusion portrait of Guru Nanak Dev Ji using 1,102 iron nails and the phrase "Ek Onkar" written 551 times in 13 colours, inspired by Guru Nanak's teaching of "Tera Tera"; the portrait was placed at Gurdwara Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib in Chandigarh.[9] The same year, he made a portrait of MDH founder Mahashay Dharampal Gulati using the company's spices, following Gulati's death.[10]
In 2022, following the death of singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, Tandon created a portrait of him using golden foil film collected from a factory.[11] In 2024, on the occasion of Nek Chand's 100th birth anniversary, Tandon created a 20-foot portrait of the Rock Garden creator.[12]
He has created portraits marking religious and cultural occasions, including a portrait of Krishna made with butter for Janmashtami, and a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi made with salt.[13] For Kargil Vijay Diwas, he made a portrait of Captain Vikram Batra using spent bullet shells.[14] He created a portrait of the Dalai Lama using pencil shavings on the occasion of the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday.[15]
Tandon has also created portraits of public and cultural figures including Ratan Tata (using salt), Queen Elizabeth II (using pearls and glitter), Rabindranath Tagore,[16] Swami Vivekananda, and writer Munshi Premchand.[17]
Social themes
[edit]Tandon has created artworks addressing social issues such as excessive mobile phone use, hunger, and the effects of war, using materials such as flour, grains, soil and leaves.[18] He has also created artworks raising awareness about cancer, displayed outside medical clinics.[19]
Social work
[edit]Tandon has conducted art workshops with visually impaired students and children from underprivileged backgrounds.[2]
Exhibitions
[edit]Tandon has exhibited his work at venues in Chandigarh and Punjab, including Beant Singh Memorial (2015–2016), Punjab Kala Bhawan (2017), Law Bhawan-37 (2017)[2] and Banga Bhawan (2021).[20] His work has also been displayed at the Gadri Baba Mela in Jalandhar,[21] and as part of public health awareness displays outside medical clinics.[19]
